Activated Carbon for Water Treatment
Activated carbon is a highly porous form of carbon, commonly derived from coal, wood, or coconut shells, and is widely used in water treatment.
The production process involves two main stages:
-
Carbonization – The raw material is heated at low temperatures in an oxygen-free environment to remove volatile components.
-
Activation – The carbon is then heated at higher temperatures in a controlled atmosphere of oxygen and steam. This process opens up the carbon structure, creating exceptional porosity and a vast surface area.
To put this in perspective, just one pound of activated carbon has a surface area equal to 125 acres.
How Activated Carbon Works
Activated carbon filters remove contaminants primarily through:
-
Adsorption – Organic molecules and other impurities are trapped on the carbon’s porous surface.
-
Physical Screening – The fine structure blocks certain particles from passing through.
Types of Activated Carbon Filters
There are two main types of activated carbon filters used in water filtration and reverse osmosis systems:
-
Granular Activated Carbon (GAC):
Contains loose granules of carbon. These filters are less dense than carbon blocks and are effective for general adsorption. -
Carbon Block:
Made by fusing activated carbon particles into a solid block. Carbon block filters have a higher adsorptive capacity and efficiency compared to GAC. When designed with a fine pore size, they can also provide micro-filtration.
Important Note
For optimal performance, leave the filter to soak for 24 hours before use to ensure proper activation.
